Ubud, the Heart of Bali
Ubud is the art and cultural centre of Bali. It is located in central Bali, in the centre of the fertile rice growing plains. As a home to the arts and crafts, there are a lot of art workshops and galleries spread around the town. Painting, music, dance and gamelan as well as woodcarving, mask making and sculpture have attracted visitors for decades. Many dances, drama and rituals originated from hundred of years ago are still being practiced here.
In general, it is quieter than Kuta. To outsiders, Ubud is like a small town but in fact it consists of fourteen villages where quiet village life continues, undisturbed by modern lifestyle. Out from Ubud are magnificent landscapes to view, temples to visit and wonderful sights to enjoy.
Central Ubud has 3 main streets: Jl. Raya Ubud, Jl. Monkey Forest and Jl. Hanoman. At the intersection of Jl. Raya Ubud and Jl. Monkey Forest are Ubud Market and Ubud Palace. There are wide ranges of accommodations, art galleries, cafes, travel agents, pharmacies, schools, etc. along Jl. Monkey Forest (runs south through town to Monkey Forest). Jl. Hanoman which is parallel to Jl. Monkey Forest is a bit quieter for a nice walking.
